Christmas Can Be Confusing
Searching for the perfect Christmas Tree

Christmas can be confusing.  A time filled with sparkle and hustle, God and gaudiness, giving and taking, grief and greed, love and hate.  It is a time that calls us to look at life from the eyes of our souls and yet reach for our wallets.  Below are several quotes about Christmas.  Which best describe how you sometimes feel?

“I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”
― Charles Dickens

This whole Santa Claus thing just doesn’t make sense. Why all the secrecy? Why all the mystery?
If the guy exists why doesn’t he ever show himself and prove it?
And if he doesn’t exist what’s the meaning of all this?
I dunno. Isn’t this a religious holiday?
Yeah, but actually, I’ve got the same questions about God.”
― Bill Watterson

“My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?”
― Bob Hope

“How many observe Christ’s birthday! How few, His precepts!”
― Benjamin Franklin

“The Supreme Court has ruled that they cannot have a nativity scene in Washington, D.C. This wasn’t for any religious reasons. They couldn’t find three wise men and a virgin.”
― Jay Leno

“Christmas doesn’t come from a store, maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more….”
― Dr. SeussHow the Grinch Stole Christmas

“The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.”
― George Carlin

“In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it ‘Christmas’ and went to church; the Jews called it ‘Hanukkah’ and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say ‘Merry Christmas!’ or ‘Happy Hanukkah!’ or (to the atheists) ‘Look out for the wall!”
― Dave Barry

Christmas Can Be Confusing
Looking for the true meaning of Christmas

“Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas-time.”
― Laura Ingalls Wilder

“A lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together.”
― Garrison KeillorLeaving Home

“One can never have enough socks,” said Dumbledore. “Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn’t get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books.”
― J.K. RowlingHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

“Oh look, yet another Christmas TV special! How touching to have the meaning of Christmas brought to us by cola, fast food, and beer…. Who’d have ever guessed that product consumption, popular entertainment, and spirituality would mix so harmoniously? ”
― Bill WattersonThe Essential Calvin and Hobbes

“And when we give each other Christmas gifts in His name, let us remember that He has given us the sun and the moon and the stars, and the earth with its forests and mountains and oceans–and all that lives and move upon them. He has given us all green things and everything that blossoms and bears fruit and all that we quarrel about and all that we have misused–and to save us from our foolishness, from all our sins, He came down to earth and gave us Himself.”
― Sigrid Undset

I was just immersed in a weekend long festive celebration about things pertaining to our God,… It was not of my own language or culture, but it was great big party for them,… What an unexpected pleasure it was to find myself in their midst and to experience myself as one simple little sheep among many whose Lord was making them glad!

“Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas-time.”

Psalm 9:2 “I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.”

Song of Solomon 1:4 ” … We will be glad and rejoice in you. … ”

Isaiah 25:9 “And it will be said in that day: ‘Behold, this is our God; … This is the LORD; We have waited for Him; We will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.’”

Joel 2:21 “Fear not, O land; Be glad and rejoice, For the LORD has done marvelous things!”

Luke 1:14 “And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.”

Revelation 19:7 “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory … “

  2. I love that you quoted Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes TWICE! 🙂 One of my favorite comics! And I have to agree with Dumbledore – a good pair of comfy socks are to be treasured. But, much as I love Calvin and socks, I have to go with the quote by Sigrid Undset. George Bailey tries to lasso the moon for Mary, but God actually has already done it, and given it to us.

    1. Bill Waterson never asked my permission to retire and I have mourned the loss of Calvin, the most literate comic strip ever, since. I love that idea about the moon and God already giving it to us.

  3. I vote Bob Hope and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Temper the two for reality.
