Sunday Psalm: A Prayer of Confession to Dissolve Rock-hard Hearts

Reading Time: 2 minutes

BEING IN A MARRED or broken relationship hardens us to love. We feel we must steel ourselves from real or possible pain. This is evermore true for us and our Creator. Hiding, however, turns us rock-hard and leaves us moored in a lonely land. Confession is an act of bravery. It’s vulnerability that allows God’s love, grace, and redemption to flow through our very pores. Confession opens us to the beauty of being in a relationship with God. Today’s Sunday Psalm is a prayer of confession to dissolve our rock-hard hearts.

Water and Grace will find a way even through rock

Great Healer:

We confess:

Granite guilt calcifies our hearts and minds.

Crushing us under tectonic weight.

Enemies sledgehammer us with lies,

Steely abuse too massive to face.

We are shattered and scattered like chert,

Sharp-edged and broken off from the whole.

Our Master’s design usurped, unworked,

Abandoned after our ruinous fall.

Splintered rock prone to fall

Sin tarnishes even our finest work.

Minds, hands, and hearts, harden with misuse;

Beauty and brilliance masked by dirt.

Faith, and hope, and love sorely bruised.

Pollution spews from decayed horizons

We have pocked the earth by waging war.

With shards sharp and hard as diamonds

We lacerate others to keep the score.

Tree growing in rock.

Creator of love:

Heal us through the death-altering gift

And expansive embrace of your Son.

Our fractured and faulted lives forgive.

Reclaim us, reframe us as your own.

Saint Patrick's cross made of stone

Remake us fearfully and wonderfully;

Recreate us from marrow to bone;

Write grace into the heart of our story;

Knit us fresh in your protective womb.

Dissolve our desolate hearts of stone.

Redeem us with hearts for you alone.

Forgiveness flows like water even through hard hearts.
