Fire in the sky

An Election Day Prayer of Lamentation and Hope

Reading Time: 2 minutes

God gave us names we can call on when no other name will do. Jehovah-Nissi (The Lord My Banner). El-HaNe’eman (The God Who Is Faithful). El Sela (God My Rock) El Shaddai (The All-Sufficient One). Jehovah-Rapha (The Lord Who Heals). Jehovah-Jireh (The Lord Who Provides). I’ve used several of those names in the following Election Day Lamentation.

No matter how you voted, may the Lord of Peace reign in your hearts today and ever forward.

Prayer as a road to God

El Shaddai, God Almighty:

Our sacred house is aflame.

Hot tongues licking the ash.

Arsonists all! They claim

You passed them the lit match

Both sides shriek a wrong vote

Brings apocalypse by noon.

While we choke on their smoke,

They place bets in back rooms.

Jehovah-Shalom, the Lord is peace:

Screens scream endlessly on.

If their team doesn’t win,

The house will burn down

And on our heads, heaps the sin.

Statues of emotion and lamentation

Jehovah-Rapha, The Lord Who Heals:

Douse the fire our fear struck.

Drench us with your perfect love.

Release us from terror’s clutch.

Hold us in your Spirit’s crush.

El Shama, the God who listens

Forgive our lost or mislaid

Faith as we choose our leaders.

Remind us you are the Way

Not some modern Caesar.

Jehovah-Nissi, The Lord My Banner

Return us to our true home.

Walking hand-in-hand

Living justice and Shalom.

With every woman and man.

Final Moon
