“Our society is defined by fear,” writes Barry Glassner, sociologist and author of The Culture of Fear: Why Americans Are Afraid of the Wrong Things. Glassner continues, “So it’s not surprising that three out of four Americans say they feel more fearful today than they did only a couple of decades ago.”
Glassner’s comments reflect pre-2020 Covid fear levels. Would we score four out of four today? Possibly. But there is hope. Fear can be a gift that correctly understood and managed can help us in times of trouble.
